Boston Terrier Owner Interview: Patricia Rosa

This week I was able to sit down with Patricia Rosa from PatriciaLRosa.com to learn about her experience of owning Boston Terriers. If you are thinking about buying a Boston, Patricia has a wealth of knowledge as she has a full-grown Boston of 7 years while also having a 17-month-old.

On with the interview…

What have you liked most about your Boston?

The most obedient dog I’ve ever had. One of my Boston’s will stand at the open gate and not go through when told “No.”

What are your Boston’s names?

Shi Shi Mae (pronounced she- she) and (Little Lady) Sadie Mae

What recommendations would you give to a new Boston Terrier owner?

I highly recommend puppy classes –  wonderful for both you and your dog.

What does your Boston like to do?

Both of them love balls! They both love to sit with me after a long day in our favorite chair. Shi Shi has to be on my right side, and Sadie sits on my lap.

What do you do for exercise with your Boston?

Who did you buy your Boston from? Pet store, breeder, rescue…

My first Boston was from a breeder. I emailed back and forth with the breeder, and if I didn’t see the right answers, I was determined to move on. I met one breeder who explained one momma had a difficult labor and had to go to the vet to deliver. She did not like her Boston going through a difficult labor and had her spayed. I knew she was in it for the love of the breed, not just the money.

Our second we bought from a pet store. I had puppy fever…and well…you know the rest.

What would you like to say about Boston’s or unique recommendations or advice?

I’m researching better nutrition now. My older Boston has allergies, and we give her prescription Apoquel for the itching. I would prefer to provide her with a quality diet and probiotics instead.  We don’t eat the same thing every day – why should they?

The assumption that changing their food will upset their stomach is no reason not to vary their diet. A gradual change in food is what I’ve learned 75/25 previous food to new food. Vary the brands from time to time to one food may have what another doesn’t. Both of my Bostons love apples!
