Step by Step – How to teach your Boston to spin

Step 1: Start with Basic Obedience Training and Positive Reinforcement –

Before you begin training your Boston Terrier to do any type of trick, it is important that they have proper obedience training first. This ensures that they understand basic commands such as “sitOpens in a new tab.” and “stayOpens in a new tab.”. Once they have mastered the basics, introduce positive reinforcement in the form of treats or verbal praise when they obey commands correctly.

Step 2: The Command –

Once your pup has mastered basic obedience skills and is comfortable responding to commands using positive reinforcement, start introducing the command for spinning. For this trick, use the command “spin” or “turn around”.

Say this command each time before you give them a treat or verbal praise for the successful completion of a task.

Over time, your pup will learn that when you say this command, it means something special and exciting is coming their way!

Step 3: Teach Your Pup How to Spin –

When teaching your Boston how to spin on command, start by having them sit facing away from you while holding a treat in front of them between their paws (not too close though!).

Gently encourage them with words like “come on” or “you can do it” as you move the treat around behind them in an arc shape until they turn all the way around in order to follow it.

As soon as they successfully complete one full rotation, give them lots of praise and reward them with the treat!

Continue practicing this until they can consistently perform one full rotation when given the command.

Step 4: Increase Complexity –

Once your Boston has learned how to spin one full rotation on command (and are consistently doing so), increase complexity by adding additional rotations before rewarding them with treats and verbal praise.

You can also work on increasing speed and complexity by asking them to spin multiple times quickly without pausing in between rotations.

Again, make sure that you are rewarding the successful completion of tasks with treats or verbal praise so that they know that what they are doing is correct and appreciated!
