Ever wonder how many hours a Boston Terrier needs to sleep? When I first bought Bella as a 6-week old puppy, I was worried.
I thought she was sick because of the amount of sleep she was getting a day, practically the entire day, this is normal.
However, as she is older, 10-years old, she sleeps nearly two-thirds of the day. This could be due to a sedentary lifestyle, but she is sleeping that much. So, how much is the right amount…
What is the right amount of sleep for a Boston Terrier?
Depending on the age of the Boston Terrier, they should be sleeping 12 to 14 hours per day. Older and younger Boston’s will require more sleep than dogs in their prime.

How to help your Boston get better sleep to feel rested
One thing that helped Emily and me with Bella’s sleep was to set up a routine. Just like we humans need a habit, so do animals.
The routine is critical because this also helps to ensure you the owner gets a good night sleep.
Our personal routine is established for the entire day. This way, Bella knows what is going to happen every day, no surprises.
Our current routine goes as follows:
- 6:30 am Bella goes out to go to the bathroom and go for a walk.
- 7:00 am Bella gets breakfast and water.
- 9:00 am Go for a walk (usually only on the weekends).
- 10:00 am Bella is taken outside to go the bathroom if home.
- 2:30 pm Bella is taken out if home.
- 5:00 pm Bella is taken outside for a walk and to go to the bathroom.
- 5:15 pm Bella is given dinner.
- 9:00 to 9:15 pm Bella is taken out to go the bathroom for the last time.
This routine helps Bella know when it is time for everything in her day to happen, including when to go to sleep.
If your Boston is currently struggling with going to sleep at night, try setting up a routine like this.

Have space for your Boston to sleep
You will need to have a dedicated space for your Boston Baby to sleep at night, this will help with the routine. Your dog’s sleep area should include a pillow or dog bed with a BLANKET!

Boston’s are naturally little burrowers. The blanket is essential so that your Boston can burrow underneath the blanket. This will help your dog feel secure and calm.
When your dog is calm, he will get a better nights sleep.

Final Thoughts…
Boston Terriers need a lot of sleep. If you include their lounging around your dog may seem like mine and sleep nearly two-thirds of the entire day away. This is ok.
As long as you are making an effort to go outside with your dog to give it the exercise it needs and wants.
