Boston Terrier Grooming & Care Guide

Boston Terriers are low-maintenance dogs, but they still need regular care to stay healthy and comfortable. After more than a decade with Bella, Emily and I have settled into a simple routine: a bath every few weeks, regular brushing, nail trims, and daily exercise.

As a rule of thumb, most Bostons should be bathed every 4 to 6 weeks and need 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day. Their short coats and short noses also mean they need a little extra help in very hot or cold weather. Below are all of our grooming, exercise and gear guides, grouped by topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should you bathe a Boston Terrier?

Most Bostons should be bathed every 4 to 6 weeks. Some can be bathed weekly if needed, and others can go as long as 8 weeks. See our bathing guide.

How much exercise does a Boston Terrier need?

Most Bostons need 30 to 60 minutes of exercise a day, and consistency matters. Don’t try to fit 60 minutes into one day and skip the next. Read our exercise guide.

Do Boston Terriers shed?

Yes, Bostons shed, though their short coat makes it manageable. Regular baths and brushing help. Our 3 steps to reduce shedding explain how we handle it with Bella.

Why is nail trimming important for a Boston Terrier?

When nails touch the ground with every step, they push back into the nail bed and put pressure on the joints of the foot. Our nail trimming guide shows how to make it stress-free.

Can Boston Terriers handle cold weather?

Bostons have short coats and many get cold quickly, so a coat or sweater helps in winter. See what owners say about Bostons in the cold and our winter clothes guide.
